The Labour Relations Specialist is responsible for providing expert consultation and advice on all matters related to Labour Relations: including the grievance and arbitration procedures, collective bargaining, dispute resolution, contract administration and interpretation, and association/management relations. Job Responsibilities
  • Provide expert recommendations/solutions related to the management of support staff and ensure consistency throughout business practices and interpretation of collective agreement(s)
  • Identify and develop required policies, procedures, and documentation related to the support staff groups
  • Lead and implement program changes across the company including education and communication initiatives to the various faculties and departments
  • Provide credible expert advice and consultation, education and support to the team as well as the extended team of Human Resources, staff, and senior leaders on group benefit plans and programs
  • Periodically survey industry and/or market on a national level to identify emerging trends and provide recommendations as necessary
Candidate Qualifications 
  • A degree in Business Commerce, Human Resources, or Labour Relations related discipline; a Degree in law would be considered an asset
  •  A Labour Relations Professional Certification and a Chartered Professional in Human Resource designation is preferred
  •  Minimum eight years of progressive experience in a professional human resources role and a track record of success as a Labour Relations Specialist
  • Experience dealing with Union, Association and employer contracts
  • Experience working through bargaining and negotiation processes, grievances, arbitration preparation and presentation
  • Experience with collective agreement interpretation, employee relations issues, human rights, and performance management and labour practices
  • Ability to engage, manage difficult conversations and influence outcomes while maintaining strong trusting relationships
  • Ability to role-model collaborative leadership skills and work effectively in a dynamic environment while managing multiple client demands and priorities
  • Strong business acumen and solid understanding of employment standards and compensation
  • Sound problem solving, decision-making, and project management skills and experience
  • Ability to travel as required
