Our client, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is looking for a Senior Labour and Employee Relations Specialist to join their dynamic and fast paced team that deals with a broad scope of Labour and Employee Relations issues.  This position provides specialist advice and guidance to internal and external clients on the administration, interpretation in regards to institutional policies and programs and collective agreements (as they apply to employee relations issues). Job Responsibilities 
  • Establish, maintain and foster solid working relationships with union representatives to promote a co-operative and effective labour relations climate
  • Prepare and conduct training on assorted labour relations matters such as collective agreement interpretation and application, Alberta Labour Relations Code, attendance, discipline and effective conflict resolution
  • Research, prepare and present arbitration submissions as well as represent management in other conflict resolution forums
  • Work with line management in identifying and preparing to pursue strategic bargaining issues and to develop arguments to defend the institution’s position on labour relations issues
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of grievances and the administration of the grievance and arbitration process 
  • Handle the administration of collective agreements and all other corporate policies applicable to bargaining unit employees, with particular focus on outreach and education with our first line supervisor
  • Represent the company at grievance meetings, labour management conferences and technological, operational or organization change meetings with union representatives
  • Represent the institution before various external agencies as required
  • Actively participate in collective bargaining process and administering collective agreements and identify external business and market trends with respect to the bargaining units
  • Align labour relations strategies to various external influences
  • Partner across the organization to deliver value-added service to leaders that drive the business objectives of the organization
  • Provide complex advice on employee relations issues including lawyer letter responses and contract reviews 
Candidate Qualifications
  • Bachelor or Master's degree with a strong focus on Human Resources and Labour Relations or Labour Law
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution Certification preferred
  • Minimum five to seven years’ experience with labour relations in a heavily unionized environment
  • Comfortable working with multiple collective bargaining agreements
  • Experience in preparing and presenting arbitration cases
  • Excellent knowledge of employment related legislation – Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code and jurisprudence
  • CPHR designation preferred
  • Comfortable traveling off-site as required and the ability to have a flexible schedule during peak work times
  • Able to understand case law and explain to others in a simple, understandable way
  • Ability to build relationships with the management team and be the subject matter expert on labour relations
  • Demonstrates accountability and is results driven
